Let me be clear: there are no miracles. If your cell phone’s processor gets hotter than it should, or if your battery is about to “run out,” there is little you can do if you only act on the software side.

However, in many cases, it is a software misconfiguration that causes the phone to overheat, and therefore, by putting into practice some “tips” like the ones I’m going to give you in today’s guide, you can improve the situation without resorting to an assistive device.

WARNING: Some of the applications recommended in this guide, if used incorrectly, may compromise the operation of the mobile phone and its internal components (CPU, GPU, etc.). As highlighted in the post, the use of these apps is only recommended for those who are well-versed in their work and know where to get them. Let’s start with some basic rules that should allow you a cool phone to keep it at acceptable temperatures.

These are simple tips, but you know that it is better to be demanding and not miss any details in these cases.

  • Charge your mobile phone correctly – when you put your mobile phone on charge, do it right. In other words, use a good quality charger, do not leave the device charged for too long after reaching 100% charge (this will shorten the battery life and may cause the phone to overheat), and let it breathe. Remove the cover to the device and do not place it in too hot places.
  • Where do you keep your phone? – the mobile phone may also overheat due to being left in places where it should not be, such as in a car (in direct sunlight) or in tight pockets. In principle, mobile phones resist well in places with temperatures ranging from -20 ° to 45 ° C, but it’s best not to go to any extremes.
  • Beware of Housings – Another element that can negatively affect the temperature of a mobile phone by causing it to rise is the cover. When purchasing a case, make sure it is made of good quality materials and helps dissipate the heat generated by your phone.
  • Do not apply force to the mobile phone for a long time. – As mentioned above, the mobile phone overheats when running particularly complex games and applications. Therefore, to ensure that the temperature does not exceed the maximum permissible level, avoid using “heavy” applications and games for a long time. And if the temperature is very high outside, completely avoid activities that could strain the phone (including using a connection and recording very long videos).
  • Check your camera settings – if you have an Android mobile phone and you notice the phone overheating while taking photos and videos, try accessing the camera app settings and lowering the quality of the videos and photos taken by the device a little. Of course, you should only change this parameter if you need to record long videos or take several pictures in a row.
  • Check if the mobile phone is really too hot – before you panic and look for a solution to cool your phone, make sure that the temperatures reached by the latter are really high, that is, above the level of protection.

In fact, sometimes, the heat normally generated by a mobile phone in daily use is confused with overheating (temperatures exceeding the phone’s protection levels are allowed instead).

Typically, mobile phone processors operate at temperatures between 32° and 40° C, while batteries have an average temperature of 20° -27 ° C. Obviously, however, the values ​​increase as the outside temperature rises (in summer, for example) and when the phone is in a loading state (for example, the processor temperature rises when running very complex games or applications, and the battery temperature rises when the device is charging).

It would help if you started worrying when it’s not too hot outside and the processor temperature is constantly above 40 or even 50 degrees. To monitor the temperature of your mobile phone, you can use apps like CPU-Z for Android. For iPhone, Unfortunately, there are no such solutions.

What Apps Heat Up the Phone?

Now let’s move on to actions, that is, to all those operations that can reduce the workload and, therefore, our mobile phones’ temperature.

The first thing I recommend that you do is to analyze the applications running on the device and identify the most CPU-intensive ones.

Use the System Monitor Lite app to find out which applications are the most processor-intensive on your Android device. This is a free task manager that lets you see which processes are consuming the most CPU, RAM, and network.

To use it, download it from the Play Store, launch it, press the  button located in the upper left corner, select the Excellent app item from the bar that appears to the side.

For now, play by voice with the CPU / CPU located under the red bar, and find out which applications are making the most of your mobile phone’s CPU.

If among the applications that “load” the processor, there are some that you do not need or that, in any case, you do not consider necessary, uninstall them, and you will see that the problems with overheating of your phone will improve. Perhaps in a minimal part, but they will improve.

Sleeping apps

If you are using an Android mobile phone, another practice that can help you keep your device temperature in check is sleeping apps.

Putting an application into hibernation means suspending the application while the phone is turned off, which prevents the device from waking up temporarily by performing operations that could load the CPU and battery.

To hibernate apps on Android, you must use Landscaping: an app that can be downloaded for free from the Play Store that allows you to hibernate apps that would normally keep your device running in the background.

Greenify does not necessarily require root to run. Still, it offers more advanced features and finer control oversleeping apps (so it is recommended to use it in root mode). ,

It is also important to note that when using Greenify in messaging applications (such as WhatsApp or Messenger), notifications will no longer be received in real-time; They will only arrive at regular intervals, and this can lead to missing important messages. Therefore, my advice is to put into hibernation mode only those applications that you do not need to work or that you in no case use to receive messages to which you must respond promptly.

To use Greenify, all you need to do is complete the initial application setup procedure (ask if it is rooted and if you want to activate the Smart sleep function, thanks to which in Android 5.1.1 and newer, closing Music players and other applications that have right to continue working when the phone screen is off) press the (+) button and select applications for sleep mode.

If you want to know which applications are most likely to “wake up” your device using CPU and RAM, use the application. Wakelock detector (which, however, only works on rooted devices).

Cooling Apps for Your Phone: Are They Really Necessary?

If you have an Android mobile phone, open the Play Store and search for apps to cool your phone, you will find a lot of them.

However, few people work or that they are 100% reliable anyway. To better understand what I mean, I’ll give you some practical examples of potentially useful applications that should only be used when really needed and with a thorough analysis of their impact on the system.

1. Coolify (free)

Cooley is one of the most popular apps of its kind. According to its official description, apply over 80 optimizations to the system to help the mobile phone maintain the ideal temperature.

It seems to work fine in some cases, but unfortunately, it does not offer the user control over the work he does on the system (in practice, they press a button, and everything happens in a “magical” way).

Among other things, some optimizations performed by Coolify and similar applications can have a negative impact on system performance. For example, only in Coolify have some users noticed a decrease in the sync frequency between RAM and disk and changes in other parameters, which can lead to more memory usage and data loss in the event of a failure. ,

In short: it is possible that Coolify does its job well, but also, considering that it requires root (so it goes to the end of the system configuration), it is good to use it with extreme caution and only when really needed. I personally only recommend this if, after trying all the other solutions suggested in the guide, you still have not been able to “update” your mobile phone.

2. CPU Cooler Master (free)

CPU Cooler Master is a fairly simple application that allows you to find out the CPU temperature and close all applications that might load the phone’s processor.

It also includes a feature to receive alerts when the CPU temperature exceeds certain thresholds and a feature to close applications that consume too much CPU automatically; Everything is free.

To use CPU Cooler Master, download the app from the Play Store, launch it, and agree to activate the high-temperature warning. This, the app will notify you when the CPU exceeds 36 ° C (this value can be changed by going to the advanced setup menu).

Subsequently, if you want to know which applications consume the most CPU resources and, therefore, can lead to overheating the mobile phone, click the button Detects applications that are overheating.

After a few seconds, the list of applications and processes that are consuming the most CPU resources, and you can decide whether to complete them by checking the box next to their name and pressing need cleaning, is at the bottom.

To configure the CPU Cooler Master settings, click the (…) button located in the upper right corner, select the settings item from the menu that appears, and go to Advanced Settings.

On the screen that opens, you can select the temperature threshold. The application should send you alerts. You can activate the Long-term cooling function (only for devices on which the root procedure is applied), which allows you to automatically close applications overheat your phone.

Back in the configuration menu, you can create a list of Cool Master CPU ignored applications (that is, applications that should not be closed even if they load the processor) and can disable the delete reminder which CPU Cooler Master shows every time you uninstall an application (in my look, completely useless).

In short: as you might have noticed, CPU Cooler Master is nothing more than a task manager with some “extra” features designed to monitor temperatures.

It doesn’t work wonders (since it doesn’t have a profound effect on system settings), but if used carefully, it can be useful in small doses without stopping all processes running in the background. I only recommend using it if you don’t want to try more complex applications like the aforementioned Greenify.

Reset mobile phone

If you still haven’t managed to cool down your cell phone at this stage of the guide, I’m sorry, but you should resort to heavy artillery and try all the most radical and dangerous solutions that are available to you.

The first “radical” solution that comes to mind is a full reset of the phone, with which you can restore the system to factory state and eliminate the applications, processes, and configuration issues that caused the device to overheat.

Before restarting your phone, be sure to create a backup full of all data stored in the latter (which will be lost).

Change kernel settings

Suppose you have an Android mobile phone and you are an experienced user. In that case, you can consider the hypothesis of changing the Android core to reduce the frequency of the processor and thereby reduce the heat generated by the latter.

The Android kernel is the engine of the system that provides all the coordinates for the software to run and manages key components such as

CPU, GPU, display, and battery. Therefore, if you change it, there is a serious risk of damaging hardware components.

It is also important to remember that underclock can drastically degrade your phone’s performance. In short: this is an operation that should only be performed if you know where to go and have a deep knowledge of modifying Android systems.

To change Android kernel settings, you must have a rooted device and applications like Kernel Adiutor, allowing you to change many kernel parameters freely.

Check for Hardware Problems

If you have reached this point in the guide, you still have not been able to solve your mobile phone overheating problems. Sorry, but you should seriously consider the hypothesis that the device has hardware problems.

In this case, my trivial but necessary advice is to contact the service center and request a check of the battery, processor, and other components.

You could get away at a much lower cost than your fear (even if you’re out of warranty if the manufacturer’s free repair program covers the device).
